"Disarmament Now!", Script by Arthur Wyatt, © Arthur Wyatt 2001
Page 1:

Panel 1: We're looking at a TV showing images of a war somewhere. There a little indistinct and we don't quite see what kind of weapons people are using. The TV is mounted on a wall bracket in a bar.

Caption: THE MORNING NEWS. YET ANOTHER AWFUL WAR IN YET ANOTHER AWFUL THIRD WORLD COUNTRY.

Viktor (from off panel): TURN THIS SHIT OFF

Panel 2: Pull back from the TV. A hefty looking barman wearing a vest and an apron reaches over and turns the TV off.

Barman: S'EDUCATIONAL. YOU SHOULD WATCH IT. ITS THE WORLD WE LIVE IN.

Panel 3: Large panel. Viktor Previn, a skinny bearded man in his fifties with long lank hair, sits at a bar with a vodka bottle and shot glass in font of him. The bar is a real grimy hole, with decor that suggests some central European country. He has a tired look on his face. Off to one side the side the Barman cleans glasses.

Title: "DISARMAMENT NOW!"

Credits.

Viktor: IT'S THE WORLD I HELPED CREATE. IF I WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT IT I WOULDN'T BE DRINK A BOTTLE OF VODKA EVERY DAY FOR BREAKFAST.

Caption: MY NAME IS VIKTOR PREVIN. ARGUING WITH THE BARMAN IN THIS DUMP WILL PROBABLY BE THE HIGHLIGHT OF ANOTHER ORDINARY ALCOHOL SOAKED DAY....

Panel 4: from behind Viktor. He half turns to look over his shoulder. The barman is looking at someone of panel who's just come into the bar.

Barman: OI, WHAT DO YOU WANT?

Voice (from offpanel): <RAPID FIRE>

Caption: ...OR MAYBE NOT SO ORDINARY.

Panel 5: Viktor dives. Behind him we see the section of bar where he was sitting explode as it is hit by gunfire. We also see another round blowing a hole in the barman's chest.

Panel 6: Small panel. From floor level we see Viktor's head and shoulders as he is lying n the ground, and also we see along his line of site to a doorway. Above it is a sign: Fire exit

Page 2:

Panel 1: We're in an alley around the back of the bar, near the fire door. Viktor's got a vodka bottle, and is holding it up by the neck, ready to use it as a club.

Caption: I WASN'T LYING EARLIER. I DID CHANGE THE WORLD.

Panel 2: The firedoor opens and the would be assassin steps through. He's a blond man wearing a heavy trench coat and sunglasses. No weapon is visible, but the mans right hand is hidden by the doorframe. The door is between the assassin and Viktor and the assassin is looking the other way, so when the door closes Viktor is going to be able to wack him over the head with the Vodka bottle.

Caption: AND THE WORLD HAS BEEN TRYING TO GET ME BACK FOR IT EVER SINCE.

Panel 3: Viktor hits the assassin over the back of the head with the Vodka Bottle, knocking him out.

SFX: Wunk

Panel 4: Large panel. In a test room deep in some soviet science complex a soldier closes his eyes and grits his teeth. Waves of psychic energy boil off of him and across the room a test subjects head explodes. This panel is a flashback, and there's going to be a couple like it on this and the next few pages, so it might be an idea to give it a distinctive look using a different art style, colouring or even a different border.

Caption (top): YOU'VE HEARD OF THE SCIENCE CITIES? RELICS OF THE SOVIET ERA, WHOLE CITIES OF SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, FIGHTING THE AMERICANS THROUGH SUPERIOR TECHNOLOGY.

Caption (bottom): THEY HAD SUCH WONDERS THERE. EATHQUAKE MACHINES, PROTOTYPE TELEPORTERS, SOLDIERS THAT COULD BLOW UP THE ENEMIES HEAD JUST BY THINKING HARD AT THEM...

Panel 5: Viktor reaches the end of the alleyway and glances out. From over his shoulder we see a car with tinted black windows. Two more assassins wearing trench coats and sunglasses stand by it.

Caption: OF COURSE THAT WAS SIXTY YEARS BEFORE MY TIME. EVERYTHING HAD SCALED BACK CONSIDERABLY BY THE TIME I GOT THERE.

Viktor (whispered): Chyort!

Page 3:

Panel 1: Large panel. Viktor in a laboratory - surrounded by beakers, glasses and equipment. He is much younger. His hair is tied back into a ponytail, his beard is trimmed neatly and he is wearing a lab coat. On the table in front of him is a fish tank containing some biological monstrosity, like a lamprey crossed with a centipede.

Caption: MY TASK WAS TO DEVELOP MINIMUM RESOURCES WEAPONRY. GUNS THAT COULD BE CREATED QUICKLY AND CHEAPLY, NEEDING MINIMAL MAINTENANCE AND LOGISTICAL SUPPORT.

Panel 2: Viktor climbing up and over a wall on one side of the alley.

Viktor: I SUCCEEDED BEYOND ANYTHING MY SUPERIORS BELIEVED POSSIBLE.

Panel 3: Viktor slips and falls heavily to the ground on the other side of the wall, he's now in some kind of yard.

Viktor: WHUFF!

Caption: USING GENETIC TECHNIQUES AND GRAFTING I CREATED A SYMBIOTIC BIOLOGICAL WEAPON.

Panel 4: In the foreground Viktor lies on the ground, falling down has winded him. Behind him we see one of the Assassins walking towards Viktor in a slow, deliberate way.

Caption: MAINTENANCE WAS NOT AN ISSUE, AS IT WAS A LIVING THING THAT WOULD SELF REPAIR.

Panel 5: The assassin pulls back the right sleeve of his coat to reveal a horrible warty growth on the back of his right forearm.

Caption: MINIMUM TRAINING WAS REQUIRED, SPECIALISED NEURAL TISSUE MADE THE WEAPON SELF AIMING AND VOICE CONTROLLED.

Assassin: <DEPLOY>

Panel 6: Same point of view as Panel 5, but now a biomechanical gun barrel has extruded itself from the warty growth on the mans arm. It's a living weapon, and it resembles the monstrosity that Viktor was growing in a tank in the first panel.

SFX: Sklutch

Captioned: LOGISTICAL ISSUES WERE SOLVED TOO. IT COULD LEACH THE CHEMICALS IT NEEDED FOR EXPLOSIVES FROM THE HUMAN BODY.

Page 4:

Panel 1: Our last 3 flashback panels. These should be a row of 3 panels, the same size, showing the same view over time. This one shows a mason jar filled with clear liquid. In the middle of it is the tiny chunk of formless biological matter.

Caption: BEST OF ALL IF YOU WANTED ANOTHER ONE YOU COULD JUST TAKE A CUTTING AND GROW IT IN A JAR OF SUGAR-WATER. IT WAS THAT SIMPLE.

Caption: AND THAT'S WHERE THE TROUBLE BEGAN. AT THAT TIME THERE WAS SO LITTLE MONEY IN RUSSIA, ANYTHING NOT BOLTED DOWN WAS BEING SOLD FOR FOOD.

Panel 2: The same view again. Now its grown into a curled up, embryonic form of the gun creature we saw on page 3.

Caption: AND OF COURSE FROM EACH CUTTING YOU COULD TAKE A CUTTING, AND FROM THAT YOU COULD TAKE ANOTHER CUTTING AND SO ON AND SO ON...

Panel 3: The same view again. Now it is so large that it fills the jar.

Caption: SOON EVERY WARLORD, GANGSTER, TERRORIST AND FREEDOM FIGHTER IN THE WORLD HAD THEIR OWN BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS FACTORY. AND SO DID WHOEVER WAS OPPOSING THEM.

Panel 4: Large panel. We're back in the yard where Viktor fell. From a raised point of view we can see that the other Assassins have arrived, and they have him surrounded. There's no escape now. All of them are armed with the bio-gun.

Caption: YOU'D THINK THEY'D BE GRATEFUL. BUT NO, THE BASTARDS ALL WANT TO KILL ME FOR ARMING THEIR ENEMIES.

Viktor: ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT… YOU'VE GOT MY ATTENTION. WHAT WAS IT YOU WANTED TO TALK TO ME ABOUT?

Page 5:

Panel 1: One of the Assassins, a tall blonde woman, steps forwards and levels her gun at Viktors head.

Blonde Assassin: VIKTOR PLEVIN.

(link) IN THE NAME OF THE ESTONIAN LIBERATION FRONT WE SENTENCE YOU TO DEATH FOR CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY.

(link) ANY LAST WORDS?

Panel 2: A smile begins to spread across Viktors face.

Viktor: YES

(link) <DETONATE>

Panel 3: Large panel. The right arm of each of the assassins explodes in a shower of gore. Chunks of meat and fragments of bone fly around everywhere. If you've got space for it Viktor will be cowering in the middle, shielding his face with his arms.

Caption: OF COURSE IT HELPS THAT I CREATED THE WETWARE FOR THE GUNS VOICE RECOGNITION SYSTEM. IF I GET CLOSE ENOUGH, I CAN TRIGGER IT.

Panel 4: Surrounded by blood and armless bodies Viktor lights up a cigarette.

Caption: I YOU COULD SAY IT'S ME DOING MY BIT FOR WORLD DISARMAMENT.
